There's a crucial distinction that many Indian consumer brands blur, sometimes with expensive consequences. Category creation and brand building are related, but they're not the same thing. Confusing the two leads to messaging that does neither job well nor marketing spend that doesn't compound the way it should.

What category creation means

Category creation is the work of making consumers understand that a new type of product or solution exists, and that they need it. It's not about your brand yet. It's about the problem.

When plant-based proteins first entered the Indian market, the first job wasn't to convince consumers to choose Brand A over Brand B. It was to convince them that plant-based protein was worth considering at all. That's category work. It's expensive, it's slow, and the benefits often accrue to multiple players, including competitors who enter after you've done the hard work.

What brand building is and isn't

Brand building is the work of making consumers choose you, specifically, within a category they already understand. It's about differentiation, emotional connection, and positioning.

The mistake many Indian consumer brands make is trying to do category work and brand work with the same rupee, using the same message. The result is content that's too educational to drive preference, and too branded to drive category adoption. It falls between two stools and achieves neither goal effectively.

How to know which job you're doing

Ask yourself one question: Does my target customer already understand why they need this type of product? If the answer is no, you're in category creation. Your content should be educational, problem-focused, and category-level. Your brand should appear, but it shouldn't be the centre of the message.

If the answer is yes, they understand the category, they're just not choosing you, you're in brand building. Your content should be differentiation-focused, emotionally resonant, and specific to why you are the right choice within the category.

The Indian market nuance

In India, this distinction gets complicated by the fact that consumer awareness varies enormously by geography, income level, and age group. A product that's in brand-building mode in Mumbai metro may still be in category-creation mode in Tier-2 cities.

Smart brands build separate content streams for different audience segmentsor at minimum, ensure their category-level content is accessible enough to serve both audiences without confusing either.

The strategic takeaway

Before briefing your content or branding team, get alignment on one question: Are we building the category or building our brand within it? That single clarity will change the brief, the message, the channel mix, and ultimately the outcome. Brands that get this distinction right don't just grow faster; they build equity that compounds over time.
